Haverhill state Rep. Andy Vargas has been tapped to deliver the commencement address at the 2018 Northern Essex Community College graduation on Saturday, May 19.

Approximately 1,000 graduates from the school’s Haverhill campus are expected to receive certificates and associate’s degrees.

In his commencement address, Vargas will stress to graduates the importance of civic and community engagement. A Boston University graduate, Vargas understands the impact of early engagement first-hand, having been elected as the Haverhill City Council’s first Latino councilman in 2015 at age 22.

Northern Essex President Lane Glenn looks forward to welcoming Vargas to campus.

“Civic engagement has always been a cornerstone of a solid educational foundation,” Glenn said. “Rep.Vargas, even as a high school and college student, was a shining example of that. We want our graduates to know as they move out into the working world the importance of maintaining civic engagement.”

Currently serving residents of the 3rd Essex District on Beacon Hill, Vargas kicked off his re-election campaign last week in Haverhill.
