Vargas Could Be Sworn In as State Representative Next Week

Rep.-Elect Andy Vargas could be sworn in to office as soon as next week.

The only legal obstacles in the way of Vargas going to work as the 3rd Essex state representative were being cleared Thursday. The process began when Haverhill City Clerk Linda L. Koutoulas certified Tuesday’s election results. Secretary of the Commonwealth William F. Galvin’s office was expected to quickly follow suit. Because Vargas is filling the unexpired term of Rep. Brian S. Dempsey, officials said, there is no reason to delay his swearing in.

Galvin’s office told WHAV today the earliest the swearing in could take place Wednesday, following a noon meeting of the Governor’s Council, which is charged with certifying election results.

Vargas told WHAV he did not have any official word, but was also led to believe a swearing-in could take place “sometime next week.” Just after his election Tuesday night, he told WHAV an early swearing in was possible.

“I spoke with the speaker today and I know we’re going to try to get the swearing in as soon as possible, but I’m not sure yet.”

Once he takes state office, Vargas said, he would resign from his job as senior marketing manager at Lowell-based Entrepreneurship for All (EforAll). However, he said, he will remain on the City Council until the end of the year, when his first term expires. Since he also won re-election to the City Council Tuesday, he explained, he will resign before the second term begins.

  1. I guess no one cares that Andy is shaking hands with an “unindicted co-conspirator” and be completely happy with another board watcher on Bacon Hill.

Also, where are all the cheap bastard commentators at? I thought Democrats like paying for their “fair share” and paying for worthy causes (i.e. LOCAL news)? Or is that only when it is your pockets money comes out of you then close them?
