Sununu: N.H. Towns That Postponed Local Elections Took ‘Risk’

Plaistow’s polling place is at the Pollard School.

Communities north of the border who postponed local elections because of Tuesday’s major snow storm took the action “at their risk,” warned New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu.

Atkinson and Plaistow were among those New Hampshire communities postponing elections.

“I don’t think we’re in a position to mandate that towns stay open or reverse their direction if they so choose not to, but we do strongly recommend that they do stay open. If towns do choose, and make that choice on their own, at their risk, frankly, to make a decision to postpone their voting,” Sununu said.

Sandown cited the governor’s warning in agreeing to have town elections Tuesday despite a major snowstorm.

“There is some differing opinion on the state level as to the wherewithal, whether that is a valid process for them to take,” the governor said. Sununu, however, urged towns to at least have absentee ballots available at polling places. For those towns voting in regional school district elections, he added, “it would create a lot of confusion if some towns are voting on school issues and some towns are not.”

Atkinson and Plaistow moved elections to next Tuesday, March 21, from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. In Atkinson, voting takes place at the Community Center, while Plaistow’s polling place is at Pollard School. Absentee ballots are available at the town clerk’s office.
