Stillman D. Haynes, 87, passed away peacefully Feb. 12, at Wingate at Haverhill.
Born in Haverhill, Feb. 15, 1929, he was the son of the late Guy M. and Minnie C. (Sargent) Haynes, and brother of the late Guy S. Haynes and Evelyn I. Tabberrah. Stillman was educated in Haverhill and graduated from Haverhill Trade School. He served as a member of the United States Army during the Korean War with the 202nd MP Co. He was honorably discharge as a PFC in 1954. He worked many years as a shipper in Haverhill’s textile and dyeing industry, for firms such as Cohen & Shane. He retired in 1982.
An accomplished musician, Stillman enjoyed playing the piano for family and friends and served many years as organist for West Congregational Church. Stillman’s life revolved around West Church, where he was often referred to as a pillar of the church, being one of its oldest and dearest members. He was a direct descendant of Thomas Haynes, one of the church’s founding fathers in 1735. Stillman’s love of photography was obvious from the camera often seen around his neck. Family and friends are grateful for the many fond memories that his photos are allowing them to experience at this time. He had many interests such as reading National Geographic Magazines, listening to classical music, going on senior-center trips and enjoying time spent with friends and family.
Stillman is survived by his cousins Norma Taplin and Gwen Stuart, nieces Bertha Siegel and Martha Stuart, nephew Guy Haynes, and many friends.
Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service Wednesday, March 1, 11 a.m., at West Congregational Church, 767 Broadway, Haverhill. A private burial takes place in the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Stillman’s name to Kulea Villages, P.O. Box 333, Atkinson, NH 03811. Arrangements are under the direction of Dole, Childs and Shaw Funeral Home, 148 Main St., Haverhill.
