Four Haverhill residents were left out in the cold Sunday after a two-alarm fire ripped through a multi-family home near the city’s Lafayette Square.

Chief William Laliberty tells WHAV firefighters battled heavy smoke conditions as they worked to contain the fire that began in a second floor apartment at 28 Broadway near the former St. Joseph’s School on Dec. 16. No civilians were injured, though Laliberty confirms a police officer received minor burns to his hand while rescuing one of the occupants.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation and the Red Cross is assisting the displaced residents.
