A 28-year-old Haverhill man was arrested Tuesday afternoon in Rhode Island for allegedly shooting a man Sunday night at a Hilldale Avenue shopping plaza.

Angel Rohena was charged with assault with intent to murder, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a home, malicious destruction of property over $250 and two counts of violating an abuse prevention order, according to Detective Lt. Robert P. Pistone, Haverhill Police spokesman.

Rohena was arrested at about 2:15 p.m. by the Rhode Island State Police Violent Fugitive Task Force with the assistance of the Massachusetts State Police Violent Apprehension Team and Haverhill police detectives.

“Haverhill Police did an excellent job of putting this case together, and successfully obtaining warrants for Angel Rohena,” read a Haverhill Police statement. Police also received assistance from Massachusetts State Police Crime Scene troopers assigned to the Essex County District Attorney’s office, New York State Police and Rhode Island State Police who, according to the statement, “all tirelessly pursued the suspect, and captured him in short order.”

As WHAV first reported Sunday, an unidentified man was shot just after 8 p.m., at 7 Hilldale Ave. The man was taken to a local hospital with what were believed to be non-life-threatening injuries. At the time, police told WHAV they did not believe the shooting to be random. Police did not name the man who was shot, release his age or residence or speculate on motives.

Rohena will be arraigned in Rhode Island as a fugitive from justice, and await extradition back to Massachusetts for arraignment on warrants.
