Open Mike Show Previews Feast of the Three Saints

WHAV’s Open Mike Show Monday night previewed this weekend’s 93rd Annual Feast of the Three Saints.

The Feast, marked by ceremonies, parades, entertainment and traditional foods, takes place Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 2, 3 and 4, according to Domenic Messina and Jack Roy, members of the St. Alfio Society, who appeared on the program.

Events honor the brothers Alfio, Filadelfo and Cirino who were martyred during the year 253, but it has become a celebration of Italian-American heritage. Opening ceremonies begin Friday, 6:30 p.m., at Lawrence City Hall. St. Alfio Society members and Lawrence city officials will march the traditional parade route through the old Italian neighborhood, ending at Holy Rosary Church, Corpus Christi Parish.

Open Mike Show host Tim Coco also called on Haverhill to name Dan Speers as the city’s poet laureate. A recording was played of Speers singing a poem he wrote on the spot during Saturday’s Haverhill Democratic City Committee breakfast.

Coco compared Speers to one of the city’s favorite sons, poet John Greenleaf Whittier. He noted, like Speers, Whittier often wrote poems for local events.
