New Open Mic Show: U.S. Rep. Contender Beej Das Says Economy Must Come First

Continuing a series of interviews with candidates seeking to succeed U.S. Rep. Niki Tsongas, the New Open Mic Show visited with Beej Das Monday, April 30.

Das, who described himself as the only candidate with a business in the 3rd Congressional District, said he is a more pragmatic Democratic than other contenders. He explained to co-hosts Bill Macek and Bill Ellis that while he cares about social issues, nothing matters if you don’t have good jobs, hope and a roof over your head.

“You can’t have anything unless you have a strong economy,” said Das, quoting late Sen. Paul Tsongas.

He is CEO of Troca Hotels, a developer of small boutique hotels. One is Stonehedge Hotel and Spa, Tyngsboro.

During another segment, Haverhill Cultural Council Chair Alison Colby-Campbell and member Victoria Pham discussed the Council’s planned Wednesday, May 16 event, introducing the 19 recipients of cultural council grants. The reception is free and takes place at 7 p.m., at the Haverhill Citizens Center, 10 Welcome St.

Also during the New Open Mic, Macek and Ellis heard from Diana Clark, family outreach specialist for Turnbridge addiction treatment, of New Haven, Conn. Clark offered advice to families dealing with a loved one’s addiction.

She advised families to not to excuse an addict’s shortcomings. Instead, she said, “love and connection does make a difference.”
