Northern Essex Knights sports teams will say hello to a new face and welcome back a familiar one to the locker room once classes resume this fall. The Haverhill-based community college last week announced the promotion of baseball coach Jeff Mejia to the full-time position of Assistant Athletic Director, and the appointment of Michael Pelosi as head women’s volleyball coach.

Director of Athletics Dan Blair said both men begin their roles this week.

Mejia continues to coach the college’s award-winning baseball team, and takes on new roles to supervise the Fitness Center and assist with recruitment and athletic compliance. He’ll also lend a hand with scheduling and the strategic growth of the Knights athletic program, Blair said.

Pelosi, a Haverhill native, comes to Northern Essex with more than 10 years’ experience coaching the North Andover-based Pumas Volleyball Club.

“I’m excited to see the volleyball program develop under Coach Pelosi,” Blair said. “His enthusiasm for the sport and his knowledge of the area will be a tremendous asset in growing the program. Interest in the volleyball program is extremely strong right now and Michael’s leadership will bring the program to new heights.”

As part of the National Junior College Athletic Association, Northern Essex sponsors nine varsity intercollegiate sports including basketball, golf, softball and track and field.
