Haverhill residents and businesses that use natural gas could see increases anywhere from 2 to 23 percent on their bills by next fall.
Boston Gas and Colonial Gas, both of which do business as National Grid, have asked the state Department of Public Utilities to allow the company to raise natural gas base delivery charges for all customers in Massachusetts beginning Nov. 1, 2018.
According to information provided by the Public Utilities department, Boston Gas, which services Haverhill, plans an average 13 percent increase for residential customers who use natural gas for appliances, but not heat. Heating customers could expect a 7 percent increase. Commercial customers, depending on how much natural gas they use, would see their bills rise as little as 2 percent and as much as 23 percent.
The DPU has scheduled a public hearing on National Grid’s request on Wednesday, Jan. 31, beginning at 6 p.m. in Room 301 at Haverhill City Hall. It is one of seven hearings statewide at which natural gas customers can comment about the requested rate hike.
Attorney General Maura Healey has filed notice with the DPU that she plans to intervene in the company’s case.
