Haverhill Mayor James J. Fiorentini is seeking community input and involvement in a July 18 workshop to address the city’s housing needs. In a Tuesday Facebook post, Haverhill’s longest-serving mayor announced plans to host the discussion alongside the Merrimack Valley Planning Commission.

“Haverhill has come a long way, but some people are being left behind. My thoughts are with those whose are homeless, who can not afford to live here, those for whom the high price of housing has made the American dream unattainable,” the mayor said.

During the meeting, held Tuesday, July 18 at 7 p.m. in the Haverhill High School cafeteria (137 Monument St.), city officials will facilitate a community discussion about local demographics and rent-related issues.

Fiorentini wrote on Facebook that he hopes the workshop will promote an open, ongoing dialogue between city leaders and residents. “I fully understand that there is a perception that [Haverhill is] growing by leaps and bounds, but it is simply not the case,” said the mayor. “This meeting is the start of a conversation, not the end.”

Also this week, the Merrimack Valley Planning Commission put out a call for entries for a “Living in the Merrimack Valley” Photo Contest. Interested residents can snap a photo of their family in front of their home for inclusion into a slideshow gallery showcasing local housing options. Photos may also appear on social media and in Planning Commission Regional Open House materials. Send photos to [email protected] by July 31 for consideration.

  1. Would be great if Haverhill would build affordable housing near Amesbury Rd., Newton Rd., or Kenoza Ave. – a lot of undeveloped land in these areas that would provide ample space for new apartments/townhomes w/ parking lots and possibly recreational space and still be in close proximity to highways, public transportation, schools, shopping, etc. All low income does not need to be located “downtown” or near downtown – many families would prefer to be in a new, safe residential area as long as location is convenient and affordable.
