Home of One of City’s First Settlers Opens to Public Saturday

The home of William White, one of Haverhill’s original settlers and author of the city’s 1642 deed, is opening to the public Saturday.

His second home, built in 1680, features 10 rooms, five of them bedrooms, and remained in the White family for 245 years, according to Susan Rochwarg, the founder of the Susan Sells Real Estate Team at Keller Williams Realty. While Saturday’s open house is aimed at selling the property, currently listed at $525,000, it is also a cultural celebration, the Realtor said.

“Local artists, actors, musicians, business owners, designers, photographers and gardeners have been invited to the event to express ‘today, tomorrow and yesterday’ in and around the house and grounds.” Activities include Shakespeare readings.

The house at Mill and Boardman Streets sits on 1.5 acres in the city’s Highlands section and features mature perennial gardens, accented by patios and an expansive lawn, outbuildings and meditation garden. The homestead has seen many additions and renovations over the past 337 years.

The open house and cultural celebration takes place Saturday, May 20, from 2 to 4 p.m., at 86 Mill St.
