Haverhill is having its political moment. Just hours before Andy Vargas was sworn in at the Statehouse, another city resident announced her plans to seek a Congressional seat.

Alexandra Chandler, a former Naval Intelligence officer and married mom, said Tuesday that she’ll run for the 3rd Essex District seat soon to be vacated by Niki Tsongas.

“Three generations of our family: my parents, my wife and I and our two boys, live in Haverhill. I grew up believing the importance of family and community and how they can change people’s lives and help them to meet the toughest challenges,” Chandler said in her first campaign video released Tuesday.

Democrat Chandler, who is transgender, intends to campaign on a platform that emphasizes education, healthcare, climate change and firearms safety and control.

Boxboro entrepreneur Patrick Littlefield also filed paperwork to run for the Tsongas seat this week, bringing the candidate pool of Democrats in the race to 10. Two Republicans have also entered the race.

Tsongas announced in August that she would not seek re-election to the House of Representatives after a decade in office.
