The 3-year-old Haverhill toddler struck in Monday’s River Street pedestrian accident remains in critical condition at Boston’s Children’s Hospital ICU as the investigation into the crash continues.
In a Tuesday afternoon update, Haverhill Police spokesman Det. Lt. Robert Pistone said that the 27-year-old driver of the 2008 Honda Civic that struck the boy and two other adult pedestrians has not been charged. A preliminary investigation determined that speed and impaired driving were not factors, though poor visibility due to the rain and darkness may have contributed to the accident. Pistone also reports that the unnamed male driver, who listed a Haverhill address, may have an expired license.
The accident took place about 6:20 p.m. on River Street roughly between the 99 Restaurant and Athens Pizza. Haverhill Police and Massachusetts State Police officials facilitated accident reconstruction following the crash and Mayor James J. Fiorentini went to the scene to talk with the family and investigators.
Medics took the baby to Lawrence General Hospital with life-threatening injuries. A female pedestrian received minor injuries to her hand.
The investigation is ongoing.
