Help for Haverhill’s police staffing crunch is on the way. Rep. Andy Vargas announced Friday that the state’s Department of Public Safety and Security granted the Haverhill Police Department $205,000 at the request of Governor Charlie Baker.

The money can be used to restore, retain or hire police and fire personnel, Vargas said. The department may also choose to allocate funds for overtime.

“Supporting our staffing levels at the Haverhill Police Department means a better protected city and a higher quality of life for our officers and residents,” Vargas said in a statement. “This grant supports our efforts to ensure Haverhill is a safe place for our children and families. I thank the Baker Administration for recognizing the importance of public safety to the people of Haverhill.”

Haverhill is one of 14 police and fire departments across the Commonwealth to receive state grants to assist with public safety and emergency response services.
