As much of Haverhill endures a second day without electricity, the city has opened the Welcome Street Citizens Center as an emergency shelter.

In an update to residents late Thursday, Mayor James J. Fiorentini said National Grid crews are working around the clock, with full restoration approximately 72 hours away.

On Thursday afternoon, 70 percent of the city was said to be in the dark due to an outage at the National Grid substation in Groveland that serves our area.

Haverhill Public Schools and City Hall remained closed Friday.

The Haverhill Public Library, 99 Main St., is also available as a charging station and is open Friday and Saturday until 5 p.m.

Residents in need of assistance are asked to call the Haverhill Police non-emergency line at 978-373-1212.
