Merrimack Valley straphangers experienced a longer than usual Monday morning commute this morning when MBTA train no. 208 derailed shortly after leaving the Haverhill station at 7:35 a.m.

The commuter train made stops in Lawrence, Andover and Ballardvale before experiencing a “slow speed derailment” just south of Ballardvale, which is part of Andover.

Delays on the Haverhill line persisted late Monday morning as officials worked to clear the derailed train “as quickly and safely as possible,” according to a social media update.

Additional trains and buses were sent to reroute stranded commuters.
