Cybersecurity may be seen as a huge threat to some, but for others—including Haverhill attorney Paul A. Magliocchetti—it has the opportunity to become a booming business in the Merrimack Valley.

On Monday, the Sheehan, Schiavoni, Jutras and Magliocchetti attorneys' lawyer told WHAV he approached UMass Lowell’s Haverhill outpost at Harbor Place to host a certificate workshop program, with the potential to launch a formal course offering in the city.

“We found that between the legal compliance, the IT compliance, and what the college is already doing, it would make for a great certificate program. There’s a lot there,” Magliocchetti said.

Working with UMass Innovation Hub Director Tom O’Donnell on the partnership, Magliocchetti said the first Haverhill-based offering is a one-day class on Jan. 29.

From 1-5 p.m., the session—aimed at small and midsized businesses in the Merrimack Valley and beyond—features presentations by technology firm Advoqt and cybersecurity expert Larry Wilson. SSJM lawyer Bill Chase, a retired FBI special agent, will also offer insight into compliance on the federal and state level. For registration information, click here.

The new workshop was the highlight of a reception this week attended by state Rep. Andy Vargas, Sen. Diana DiZoglio and, in her first district meeting, new 3rd District Congresswoman Lori Trahan.

“Sixty million Americans have been affected by identity theft and it weighs on all of us,” Trahan said. “It’s definitely a bipartisan issue and I look forward to getting to work with my Republican counterparts to make programs like those you start here scalable and more contagious not just across the region but across the country.”
