When football players at Greater Lawrence Technical School hit the gridiron next fall, they’ll have the backing of the Silvio Cella Family Foundation.

The Andover-based regional school is one of four schools across the state to be awarded a $3,000 grant to enhance and expand their football program courtesy of the nonprofit named for late Revere High School football coach, math teacher and athletic director Silvio Cella.

Greater Lawrence Tech was given the good news last week at a ceremony attended by Cella’s daughter Gina and son Mike.

“We are overcome with gratitude to the Cella family for their generosity and for choosing GLTS for this year’s grant,” Head Varsity Football Coach Tony Sarkis said. “Our student athletes are very dedicated to football and will grow in their physical, intellectual and emotional abilities, something that I am sure would make Silvio Cella proud.”

Greater Lawrence Tech plans to use the money to improve playing conditions and safety, purchase equipment and offer team-building activities.

Since its inception in 2010, the Silvio Cella Family Foundation has donated more than $100,000 to high school football programs across the state.
