Haverhill Fire Department veteran Lt. Keith Grant is celebrating a recent Firefighter of the Year honor from his city colleagues. Announced this week by Fire Chief William F. LaLiberty, Grant’s award came nine months after he rescued a man from the icy waters of the Merrimack River on Christmas Eve.

Grant “demonstrated all of the attributes firefighters strive for and take pride in, both on- and off-duty,” his Local 1011 union said in a congratulatory statement.

The lieutenant, who was off-duty at the time of the rescue, told WHAV he is humbled by his peers’ accolades.

“I was in the right place at the right time and just did what any of my brother firefighters would have done. The recognition is humbling and greatly appreciated,” Grant told WHAV.

Grant, a Methuen resident, has been a member of the Haverhill Fire Department for 21 years.
