Haverhill has a new veterans’ service officer in separated U.S. Marine Captain Amanda Buckley. The first woman to be appointed to the position, Buckley takes over for longtime city employee Michael Ingham, who retired earlier this year.

Buckley, currently Haverhill’s solid waste and recycling coordinator, assumes her new role on Jan. 2, Mayor James J. Fiorentini said Tuesday.

“As the first woman to hold this position, she will also be in a unique position to be able to reach out to and assist our female veterans. I look forward to working with her,” Fiorentini said of Buckley. “She has the energy, enthusiasm and passion for veterans to be able to be an outstanding veterans’ services officer.”

A 2011 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Buckley was responsible for environmental and hazardous waste-related operations during her time in the Marines. Prior to coming to work for the City of Haverhill, she was an intern for the town of Georgetown and served as a military academic advisor at Southern New Hampshire University.

The recycling job is being filled temporarily by Buckley’s assistant.
