Elder Services of the Merrimack Valley seeks volunteers for its Brown Bag food service program. Community volunteers are needed to fill bags with food items distributed to the Haverhill site from the Greater Boston Food Bank.
ESMV’s Brown Bag team, under the direction of Laura Marsan, meets on the first Tuesday of each month in the cafeteria of Pentucket Lake School, 252 Concord St., Haverhill, between 7:30 and 8 a.m. until about 10:30 a.m.
Each month, volunteers from across the Merrimack Valley gather and fill over 2500 bags containing items including dry goods, shelf-stable milk, canned vegetables and meat or poultry. The average bag weighs 15-20 pounds. Bags are later distributed to elders and the disabled who may run low on grocery money.

While the Brown Bag Program does not currently accept food donations, many of Haverhill’s other local food banks do accept donations from the public. They include food pantries at Sacred Hearts Church, the Salvation Army, Veterans Pantry (10 Reed St.), the Universalist Unitarian Church, All Saints Church, West Church, Common Ground Café, Somebody Cares, and the Calvary Baptist Church.
