In the aftermath of two fatal shootings in Haverhill’s inner city, Mayor James J. Fiorentini will unveil plans for a Fiscal Year 2019 budget expected to focus heavily on public safety.

Fiorentini has asked to appear in front of City Council when it meets Tuesday beginning at 7 p.m. in the Theodore A. Pelosi Jr. City Council Chambers on the second floor of Haverhill City Hall. The meeting is open to the public.
The traditional budget message is the mayor’s first public discussion of his goals for the coming fiscal year, which begins July 1. Fiorentini is expected to identify his spending priorities, which councilors and residents anticipate will address the growing effects of gang violence and drug abuse in Haverhill’s neighborhoods.
Council President John A. Michitson, posting on social media accounts, urged the mayor to prioritize public education and job training as well as public safety.
Michitson said city councilors will approach the budget plan with an eye to all critical city needs.
