Haverhill native Alexandra Chandler is counting down the days until the September 4 congressional primary, opening the doors to her city campaign headquarters over the weekend on Main Street.
Vying to succeed Niki Tsongas to represent the 3rd district, which includes Haverhill, Chandler joined supporters and campaign staff on Saturday to open Team Chandler’s HQ in the Walgreens Plaza at 306 Main St. The office is used as a hub for volunteers and staff as they ramp up voter outreach in the election run-up.
“Running for office isn’t just about breaking barriers — it’s about electing the best people for the job. In this race, I’m not only ready to break a barrier and serve as the first openly transgender member of Congress, I’m ready on day one to crash through the barriers of status quo big money politics that has held our country back from meeting our challenges and addressing the needs of everyday people for far too long,” Chandler said in an email to supporters last week.
The former Naval intelligence analyst and married mom of two continues her canvassing efforts across the city in an effort to meet as many voters as possible.
Chandler prioritizes universal healthcare, paid family leave, gun safety and high-quality education, and carries endorsements from the Trans United Fund and 3rd Middlesex state Rep. Kate Hogan, among others.
The freshman candidate—facing democratic opposition on the primary ballot from Sen. Barbara L’Italian and Dan Koh, among others—vows to keep Haverhill voters top of mind if she makes it to Washington, D.C.
“Let’s stand up for one another, let’s stand up and dare to demand the best for the job, and let’s stand up for what’s right — equality, opportunity, and dignity for all– whoever you are,” Chandler said.
