Haverhill Firefighting Museum Secretary Cynthia Graham and artist Maria Fontaine gave WHAV’s Open Mike Show listeners and viewers Monday night a tantalizing preview of the planned 9/11 Community Memorial Project.

The memorial will incorporate a staircase, indicative of those at the World Trade Center, New York, where 411 first responders lost their lives Sept. 11, 2001, said Fontaine. It will be placed on the lawn near the sidewalk in front of the museum, 75 Kenoza Ave., and feature glass, brick, and aluminum, as well as generous lighting. The names of first responders, including 343 firefighters, 60 police and Port Authority personnel and eight private emergency responders will appear on the memorial

The unveiling ceremony takes place Sunday, Sept.11, the 15th anniversary of the terrorist attacks at the twin towers, New York City; U.S. Pentagon, across the Potomac River from Washington; and a field in Shanksville, Penn. Services begin at 8:30 a.m. An exhibit, “Through the Eyes of a First Responder,” will also open inside the museum.

To help pay for the memorial, Haverhill Firefighting Museum is seeking sponsors or donors willing to buy an engraved brick with up to three lines for a personal message. Donations are accepted online at haverhillfirefightingmuseum.org or by calling Graham at 978-994-1854.
