Archie Comics co-CEO Nancy Silberkleit returns live to WHAV’s Open Mike Show tonight, beginning at 6:30.

Silberkleit appears in person and is expected to address a wide variety of topics ranging from Women’s History Month to Earth Day as her Haverhill-modeled Archie comic book characters address a greater number of societal issues around the world. One recent initiative is “Getting Drastic with Plastic!”

“Getting Drastic with Plastic! is, narratively, a story of a student who accomplishes this same feat by applying scientific data, creative thinking, and community engagement around an important environmental issue,” according to literature provided by Silberkleit.

Silberkleit, a former art teacher with 25 years of experience, was thrust into the management of Archie Comics when her husband, Michael, passed away in 2008. He was the son of Louis Silberkleit, who founded the comic book company with Maurice Coyne and John L. Goldwater in November, 1939. Archie debuted in Pep Comics #22 Dec. 22, 1941. The first Archie was drawn by Haverhillite Bob Montana and written by Vic Bloom. Goldwater, credited with creating the character, died seven months before Silberkleit in 2007.

Silberkleit has visited Haverhill several times during the last year and has actively embraced Archie’s Haverhill heritage. She will appear on the Open Mike Show with WHAV President and General Manager Tim Coco.

The program may be viewed at www.WHAV.tv and in standard definition at HC Media Channel 22 on Comcast in Haverhill. Audio may also be heard at www.WHAV.net, participating cable television stations across the Merrimack Valley, Apple TV’s Golden Oldies group and Tunein (available on Web, smartphone and television apps).
