Adelaide T. (Claflin) Janes, 97, Wrote for Haverhill Journal, Haverhill Gazette

Adelaide T. (Claflin) Janes, 97, longtime resident of West Newbury, passed peacefully Sunday afternoon, Dec. 3, at Country Center in Newburyport.

She was the wife of the late Charles G. Janes Jr.

With her father dying before she was one year old and her mother never re-marrying, Janes was the only child of the late Preston W. and Clara W. (Hibbs) Claflin. She was born in Newburyport April 23, 1920, and was a graduate of Newburyport High School, class of 1937. She had worked as a medical records technician at the Anna Jaques Hospital, retiring in 1982, after 42 years with the hospital. She was also a longtime local correspondent for the former Haverhill Journal, as well as the Haverhill Gazette, West Newbury News, Newburyport Daily News and Eagle Tribune.

She had been a member of Laurel Grange of West Newbury since 1933, was a member of the National Grange, and lifelong member of the All Saints Episcopal Church in West Newbury.

She leaves her sons, Robert P. Janes, and companion Carol Cena, of West Newbury, and Paul A. Janes and wife Lorraine, of Manchester, N.H.; grandchildren, Sherrie Darcy of Pembroke, N.H., Kelly Bournival of Pelham, N.H., Lisa Eastman of Orlando, Fla., Holly Janes of Derry, N.H., and Robin Manni of West Newbury; great-grandchildren, Jake Darcy, Jasmine Larocque, Kali Ryan and Samantha Manni, along with extended family and dear friends.

Visiting hours at the Elliott, Woodworth & Rogers Family Funeral Home, 35 Green St., Newburyport,are Wednesday, Dec. 6, from 4 to 7 p.m. Laurel Grange will be conducting a service at 6 p.m. during the visiting hours. Funeral services are Thursday, Dec. 7, at 11 a.m., at All Saints Episcopal Church, 895 Main St., West Newbury, followed by burial at Rural Cemetery, West Newbury. The family asks that flowers, kindly be omitted, instead, donations in her memory may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
