One hundred rubber turkeys will descend from a helicopter circling high above Murphy’s Garrison Golf Saturday, Nov. 12, as Haverhill Kiwanis recreates a scene from a 1970s television show for charity.
Rich Porcelli appeared on 97.9 WHAV’s Open Mike Show Monday night to discuss the unusual fundraiser—loosely based on “Turkeys Away,” a 1978 Thanksgiving episode of “WKRP in Cincinnati.”
Unlike the fictitious WKRP episode, Kiwanians will drop 100 rubber turkeys. If the turkey lands on a square matching a ticket holder’s number, a prize will be awarded. There will be 400 two square foot numbered squares.
Just as radio newscaster Les Nessman reported the turkey drop for WKRP listeners, WHAV expects to cover the event live Saturday, Nov. 12, from 1 to 2 p.m., at Murphy’s Garrison Golf, 654 Hilldale Ave.
Tickets are $10 each and available from any Kiwanis member, Murphy’s Garrison Golf, WHAV and other locations around the city. Prizes range from frozen turkeys and pies from Mann’s Orchard to cash.
Also, during Monday’s Open Mike Show, Rachel, Curt and Thea Fennell discussed Spotlight Playhouse’s upcoming production of “Oliver.” The show takes place Nov. 4 through 12, at Haverhill City Hall Auditorium.
With the 9 turkeys we have on the city council – plus another in the Mayors office – there will be exactly 110 in the city now.
