Updated: Armed Robbery Suspect Robbed Upon ‘Hearing Voices’

A Haverhill man is facing armed robbery and other charges after his arrest early Sunday morning at Dudley Plaza, at the corner of Main and Dudley Streets.

Haverhill Police report 23-year-old Joseph A. Pomales of Haverhill was arrested at 4:55 a.m., Sunday, and charged with armed robbery while masked at Tedeschi Food Shop, attempting to commit a crime (breaking and entering) and malicious damage over $250. He is due to be arraigned in Haverhill District Court.

Police said Pomales robbed the store two previous times, Oct. 25 and Dec. 22. This time, he allegedly pointed a black BB gun at a store clerk. Officers found him on Portland Street and brought him back to the store where a clerk identified him through a window. Police said Pomales told them he “heard voices,” telling him to commit robberies.

In other police news, a Haverhill couple is due in court for arraignment on drug-related charges after their arrests by Haverhill Police early Sunday. Police report 36-year-old Yonna Grant and 38-year-old Michael Toleos, both of Haverhill, were each charged with possession of a class E substance and trespassing. The arrests occurred at 1:40 a.m., Sunday, at 106 Bank Road.

A Haverhill teenager is due to face charges in juvenile court in connection with a stolen motor vehicle investigation late Saturday night. Haverhill Police report a 13-year old male was taken into custody at 11:54 p.m., Saturday on Eastern Avenue. He is charged with receiving a stolen motor vehicle and resisting arrest. His identity is being withheld due to his age.

A Haverhill man is due in court after his arrest Friday evening in connection with a disturbance at the Haverhill commuter rail station, 1 Washington Ave. Haverhill Police report 57-year-old Mark W. Courtney of Haverhill was arrested at 7 p.m., Friday, on charges of disorderly conduct (subsequent offense) and attempt to commit a crime (breaking and entering a motor vehicle).
