The School Committee extended the 2017-2018 school year by one day to give students a day off to observe Veterans Day.
The committee previously approved a calendar that called for the school year to end on June 8 – a Friday – for kindergarten through grade 11 students, barring any snow days.
The revised calendar keeps students in school until one day longer, until June 11 – a Monday. An allowance for five snow days could extend the school year until June 18.
The school year will start on Aug. 29.
Veterans Day is the one holiday that is observed on the same date every year, Nov. 11, no matter what day of the week it falls on. In 2017, Nov. 11 is a Saturday.
Superintendent James F. Scully said most districts in Massachusetts are giving students a day off on Nov. 10, the Friday before the holiday; he gave the committee the option to follow suit.
The committee, with the exception of Mayor James J. Fiorentini, chose to give students the extra day off in exchange for lengthening the school year.
